-Christoph
Waltz is an academy award winning, German-Austrian actor.
-Popular Movies: Inglorious Bastards, Water for Elephants, The Green Hornet
-Comparison and Contrast: In the Canterbury Tales, the Friar is a
festive and cheerful fellow who spoke very advanced and educated. He was a
master at begging and persuading. He seduced women and lied about things to
give himself credit. For example, he claims to have a “special license from the
pope” to hear confessions and to collect money for repentance.
This is obviously false because, such a license does not exist in this story. The
Friar is a sly, conniving character with twisted motives and an oddly giddy
attitude. These
characteristics of the Friar are
displayed
in the movie Inglorious Bastard. In
this movie, Cristoph Waltz
plays
the
character Colonel Hans Landa. Christoph
Waltz plays an eerie, suspiciously terrifying Colonel
for the Nazi army during World War II. He is always cheerful in a creepy sort of
way. He is a master of deception and presents very convincing arguments to his
opinions. However, the difference between The Friar and Colonel
Hans Landa is their motives and intensity. Colonel
Hans Landa has more twisted motives and he is
plenty more intense; but both characters are great at deception and charm.
Also, both have oddly cheerful attitudes. In
both stories, Colonel Hans Landa and The Friar dress in upper class attire.
Also, Colonel Hans Landa is always seen with people of power and riches in the
movie, Inglorious Bastards. In
the Canterbury Tales, the Friar believed he was “better than lepers, beggars,
and that crew.” By looking at these two examples, it is easy to see how these
two characters’ egos match up.
The Oxford Cleric:
-Colin Firth is an English film,
television, and theatre actor.
-Popular Movies: The Kings Speech, What A Girl Wants,
Nanny Mcphee.
-Comparison and Contrast: The Oxford Cleric was a very studious and
ambitious student. He was very devout and his studies and would rather starve
himself than lack his needed knowledge. This is basically what he was doing,
considering he spent the majority of his money on his studies. It even states
in the text, “Whatever money from his friends he took he spent on learning or
another book.” The Oxford Cleric was always studying and did not speak much. He
said only what was needed; but when he would speak “A tone of moral virtue filled
his speech and gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.” He seemed devout to
bettering himself through knowledge and that takes a lot of focus. In
the movie The King’s Speech,
Colin Firth’s Character,
King George VI,
is presented with a huge challenge. His country is on the brink of war and as
king he needs to calm his citizens and ensure their safety. He must do this in
the form of a speech. Unfortunately, the king has a terrible speech impediment
and must spend the remainder of this movie overcoming his disabilities and
other personal issue between his family and marriage. The king’s ambition has
to be top notch because the importance of this speech is monumental. When he is not practicing his
speech, he prefers to keep quit; however, issues arise when he is forced to
voice his opinion. Nonetheless, his desire to learn is obvious through out the
film and the Cleric’s ambition is also obvious in the prologue. The difference
between these two characters is that the Oxford Cleric is poor but King George
VI is rich.
The Wife of Bath:
-Dame Judith Olivia Dench, CH, DBE, FRSA
is an English film, stage and television actress.
-Popular Movies: The Best
Exotic Merigold Hotel,
Casino Royale,
Chocolat
- Comparison and Contrast: The Wife of Bath is a very strong,
feminist character. She looks bold in her face and speaks the truth that is in
her mind. She believes in the power of women and the power that their sexuality
has over men. The Wife has had five husbands and has played games with all of
their heads. She enjoys holding that power over their heads because this was
such and uncommon self-righteousness for women to have during this time. When I
imagine the Wife of Bath, I think of an aged woman who still has not only her beauty,
but also her strong will and perseverance. She is a happy woman with joy and
good attitude. She is knowledgeable but not incoherent to the materialistic. In
the Canterbury Tales, the Wife of Bath “liked to laugh and chat.” She also
“knew the remedies for love’s mischances,” and “knew the oldest dances.” With
these quotes the reader can paint the picture of a fun-loving and emotional
women. There is not much said of her youth in the prologue; but we learn later
that love and husbands started at a very young age in her life. The narrator
speaks of her travels to display that she has seen and experienced a great deal
in her life. Judith Dench also displays this wisdom and power in various roles.Judith Dench
stars
in
a James Bond movie called Casino Royale.
She plays the famous role of ‘M’. “The head of the Foreign Intelligence wing of
Her Majesty's Secret Service is a rotating duty that has been undertaken by
numerous individuals in the decades since the Second World War; those
responsible for the job go by the code name of M. Three of the most famous
leaders of HMSS have become synonymous with the derring-do of HMSS' most famous
agent, James Bond”(ImbD.com).
Judith Dench is placed in a position of power and assigned the responsibility
of working with James Bond. By being granted this role, she is able to display
wisdom, courage, and power. These characteristics are seen in the Wife of
Bath’s tale. In
the movie The Best Exotic Merigold
Hotel, Dench is given the chance to play more of
a free-spirited role. Through out the movie, this character is
exposed
to life-styles unknown to her ever before. She gains a wandering nature
and as a result finds herself in conflict or adventure. In the
Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath is described as being “skilled in wandering
by the way.” This just goes to show the similarities in personality and
ventured nature in these two characters.
